Operation Chromite _ Incheon landing Operation

Operation Chromite can be one of the representing words for Incheon City. It is the code name for the Inchon landing Operation. It was an amphibious invasion and battle of the Korean War that resulted in a decisive victory and strategic reversal in favor of the United Nations. The operation involved some 75,000 troops and 261 naval vessels, and led to the recapture of the South Korean capital of Seoul two weeks later.

The battle began on 15 September 1950 and ended on 19 September. Through a surprise amphibious assault far from the Pusan Perimeter that UN and South Korean forces were desperately defending, the largely undefended city of Incheon was secured after being bombed by UN forces. The battle ended a string of victories by the invading North Korean People's Army (NKPA). The subsequent UN recapture of Seoul partially severed the NKPA's supply lines in South Korea.

The United Nations and South Korean forces were commanded by General of the Army Douglas MacArthur of the United States Army. MacArthur was the driving force behind the operation, overcoming the strong misgivings of more cautious generals to a risky assault over extremely unfavorable terrain.

On 27th of Jul, 2016 (Korean Stnadard Time),  the film of Operation Chromite was released. It is a war drama film that is directed by Lee Jae-han, based on the real-life events of the Battle of Inchon. The plot is Starring Neeson as General Douglas MacArthur, the U.N. commander-in-chief who masterminded the operation, the film tells the story of eight members of the Korea Liaison Office (KLO), including Navy Lt. Jang Hak-su, played by Lee Jung-jae, and their real-life mission called Operation X-Ray to reclaim Seoul which had been seized by North Korean forces at the beginning of the Korean War (1950-53). Jang and his crew infiltrate the headquarters of the enemy forces disguised as North Korean soldiers and steal key information needed for MacArthur's amphibious invasion.

The city also boasts cultural and tourism sources bearing the history from the ancient to the modern time of flowering. Various aspects can be found in this metropolitan city including: Incheon International Airport, Incheon Port, Songdo, Cheongna, Yeongjongdo, and Incheon Bridge. The Incheon International Airport and the Incheon Port are playing a great role for Incheon to take its place as an important city in the world. Geographic location

Geographically, Incheon is located at approximately 126°37′E, 37°28′N. This puts the city at the heart of the Korean peninsular. Incheon faces the Yellow Sea and sits at the mouth of Hangang River. Just 28km away from Seoul, the capital city of Korea, Incheon has the same latitude as San Francisco, Washington D.C., and Madrid.

Climate

Although influenced by a continental climate, traces of an oceanic climate can be detected in Incheon thanks to its location on the coast. This is why the city is subject to a smaller annual temperature range. The average temperature for the year in Incheon is 12.1℃ while the highest temperature recorded was 38.9℃ (August 16, 1949) and the lowest recorded was –21.0℃ (January 11, 1931). Precipitation is at 1,234.4mm per year which is a low amount compared to other regions at similar latitudes. The average wind speed throughout the year is 2.9m/s which blows primarily north-northwest followed by north and northwest. February ~ April endures the strongest winds while September experiences the mildest. Compared to other regions, Incheon suffers from yellow dust more frequently and the dust tends to persist for longer periods of time as well. When migratory anticyclones from central China increase the amount of southwesterly winds, it creates heavy fog on the Yellow Sea and prevents temperatures rising during the day. The total number of foggy days in Incheon is 49.4 days of which 64% occur between April and July.
